DeSoto County sheriff issues statement about possible flooding

(WMC-TV) - Action News 5 received the following statement from DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco:

We all have heard and seen the reports concerning the threat of flooding in our community. I want you to know the steps we have taken to develop a planned course of action should the circumstances call for emergency action over the next several days.

Junior League hoping weather stays dry for 5K

If you're looking to get some exercise before partaking in all the championship barbecue being served up this month, the Junior League of Memphis 5K for Kids is happening on Saturday, May 7, at 9 a.m.

It's your chance to to get a good run (or walk) in and help support an organization seeking to raise awareness of the epidemic of childhood obesity. According to the Junior league website, Tennessee currently ranks third in the nation for childhood obesity and the risk is also high for Mid-South children to develop Type 2 Diabetes.

The race starts at the Junior League of Memphis, located at 3475 Central Ave.

Amateur radio is the licensed and private use of designated radio bands for purposes of emergency and recreational communications. It is licensed by national governments. The saying goes, "when all else fails, ham radio works!" And there are over two million ham radio operators in the United States.

The Shelby County Office of Preparedness HLS/EMA, under the direction of Bob Nations, Jr., is offering amateur "ham" radio training at the Emergency Operations Center every Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., for 10 weeks,

Office of Preparedness Reserve Ham Hilliard will facilitate the class to provide information to help the ham radio beginner achieve the "Technician" level license.

Miss. tax collections beat expectations in April

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The state Department of Revenue says Mississippi tax collections beat expectations in April.

Republican Gov. Haley Barbour says that's good news, but the state still faces financial challenges with rising gas prices and unemployment that lingers around 10 percent.

The April tax collections were $40.2 million higher than original projections. That's nearly 8.4 percent higher than anticipated for the month.

Organizers say the city has had he turnouts in the past and they expect this year will be just as big.

City of Southaven to honor cheerleaders

The City of Southaven will honor the SHS Cheerleaders and their UCA National Title by proclaiming Friday April 29th as National Champion Southaven High School Cheerleader Day.

The Co-Ed squad brought back their first UCA National Title from the Disney World Sports Complex back in February. They competed in the Co-Ed Junior Varsity division.

The team will be presented with the proclamation Thursday night during their year end awards banquet.
