Manager believes BP station was targeted because of Gulf oil spill

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - The owner of a BP gas station in Southaven believes his store was targeted over the weekend by vandals frustrated by the massive oil spill in the Gulf.

Store manager Andy Hadi said his gas station was damaged by someone early Sunday morning.

Riverkings aid softball project in Hernando

HERNANDO - The Hernando Civic Center is raising funds to expand the facility's capacity to serve area youth baseball and softball teams by installing lights on three ball fields.  A unique partnership with the Mississippi RiverKings hockey team and the team's owner, Maddox Foundation, will enable the Civic Center to raise the $20,000 or more needed for the "Let There Be Lights" project in one event.

Groundbreaking scheduled for new restaurant

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis along with Fillin Station Grille owners Steve Beene, Preston Lamm, and Jim LoSapio will celebrate the opening phase of construction for Southaven’s newest eatery Fillin Station Grille on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:30 am.  
The 5,600-square-foot restaurant is being built by Chris Woods Construction Company, and will be operated by River City Management Group.  Lamm owns several well-known venues on Beale Street including Rum Boogie Café, Pig on Beale, and King's Palace Café. He also owns the Mesquite Chop House and Pa Pa Pia’s in Memphis and Southaven as well as Natural Born Grillers in Southaven.

Southaven could outlaw fake pot

SOUTHAVEN, MS (AP) - Southaven officials have drafted a proposed ordinance to ban K2 -- a synthetic herb sold in area stores as an incense that mimics a marijuana high when smoked.

Police and city officials said they've received several complaints from parents about local stores selling their kids the fake pot, which is legal but not meant for human consumption.

At next Tuesday's board of aldermen meeting, The Commercial Appeal reports city officials plan to vote on the K2 ordinance that would prohibit the use, purchase, possession or sale of the synthetic cannabinoid.

Malco Theatres Offer Kids Summer Film Fest

Malco Theatres have begun their Kids Summer Fun Fest.  This event will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. until July 28th.  The admission fee is $2.00 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit various children's hospitals in the mid-south, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Southaven to host housing opportunities workshop

Action News 5 received the following from the city of Southaven...

June is National Homeownership Month, which is a month that is dedicated to increasing the awareness of programs and opportunities that are available to individuals and families to help those who do not own a home achieve the dream of owning a home with no down payment and a low interest rate.

To promote that locally the City of Southaven will be holding a Housing Opportunities Workshop, according to Mayor Greg Davis. Interest rates are very low at this time which causes monthly payments to be less and applicants may also qualify for down payment assistance. Applicants must be credit worthy and have repayment ability to quality for a mortgage loan but credit does not have to be perfect. The City of Southaven is applying for a total of $250,000 Home Buyer Assistance Grant funds from the Home Investment Partnership Grant Program from the Mississippi Development Authority.

Southaven plans July 4th activities

The City of Southaven will host its annual July 4th Celebration this year at Snowden Grove Park Amphitheater on Sunday, July 4th.

This year’s entertainment will include performances by the Timothy Davis Band, SouthPoint Band, and Cornerstone Band. 

The entertainment will begin at approximately 7:00 pm with the fireworks extravaganza at approximately 9:00 pm.
