Residents spot black bear in Horn Lake

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - North Mississippi is home to numerous types of wildlife, but every so often, residents catch a glimpse of some out of the ordinary creatures.

"We've got raccoons. We've got opossum. We've seen fox," Horn Lake resident Jacki Gregory said. "I've had a turtle come strolling across to go to the lake."

On Sunday, Gregory crossed paths with a larger, more unusual mammal in her own backyard.

"Happened like that," she said. "And sure enough I had seen a little black bear running and it ran all the way back to the back of our property and disappeared into the next woods behind our property."

Southaven man worried about dead birds, West Nile virus

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Southaven man recently became worried about West Nile virus after finding dead birds in his neighborhood.

Randy Turner enjoys being outdoors at his residence on Greencliff Drive, but recently an increase in the number of dead birds on his property became a cause for concern.

"I skimmed one out of my pool two weeks ago," Turner said. "A couple of days later I found a dead one between mine and my neighbors house. The next day, I found a dead one in my drive."

Golfer attacked on Southaven golf course

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Southaven police are searching for a robber who attacked an elderly man on a golf course Thursday.

Police have only a vague description of the suspect.  The 70-year-old golfer was playing on a public course in broad daylight.

Manager believes BP station was targeted because of Gulf oil spill

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - The owner of a BP gas station in Southaven believes his store was targeted over the weekend by vandals frustrated by the massive oil spill in the Gulf.

Store manager Andy Hadi said his gas station was damaged by someone early Sunday morning.

Riverkings aid softball project in Hernando

HERNANDO - The Hernando Civic Center is raising funds to expand the facility's capacity to serve area youth baseball and softball teams by installing lights on three ball fields.  A unique partnership with the Mississippi RiverKings hockey team and the team's owner, Maddox Foundation, will enable the Civic Center to raise the $20,000 or more needed for the "Let There Be Lights" project in one event.

Groundbreaking scheduled for new restaurant

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis along with Fillin Station Grille owners Steve Beene, Preston Lamm, and Jim LoSapio will celebrate the opening phase of construction for Southaven’s newest eatery Fillin Station Grille on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:30 am.  
The 5,600-square-foot restaurant is being built by Chris Woods Construction Company, and will be operated by River City Management Group.  Lamm owns several well-known venues on Beale Street including Rum Boogie Café, Pig on Beale, and King's Palace Café. He also owns the Mesquite Chop House and Pa Pa Pia’s in Memphis and Southaven as well as Natural Born Grillers in Southaven.
