Mississippi man goes to trial for murder of ex-girlfriends new beau

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Mississippi man faced trial Monday on charged he shot his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend to death.

Brendan Talley, 18, was known as a kind young man who would never hurt anyone. Benjamin Talbert is on trial for killing Talley last August at the Oak Hollow Apartments in Southaven.

Nicole Kenney was Talley's friend.

"I mean he was laid back, friends with everybody, just came in and did his job," Kenney said. "He was so sweet with her."

Suspect shoots Horn Lake man during baby shower

HORN LAKE, MS (WMC-TV) - Horn Lake police have arrested a suspect after a shooting Sunday evening - during a baby shower - that left one person hospitalized.

The shooting happened around 8:00 p.m. Sunday during a baby shower at a residence in the 6000 block of Tealwood.  Authorities said the father of the unborn child stepped out into the home's driveway we he got into a verbal confrontation with the suspect, who had pulled up into the driveway.

"The suspect and the victim got into a verbal confrontation with each other," said Lt. Scott Evans of the Horn Lake Police Department. "The suspect got out of the car and shot him once in the stomach."

Southaven Officer Graduates From FBI Academy

On Friday, June 18, 2010, Lt. Matt Anderson of the Southaven Police Department graduated from the 241st Session of the F.B.I. National Academy Program at Quantico, Virginia along with two hundred fifty nine other law enforcement officers. 

UPDATE: Southaven, Horn Lake ban fake marijuana, meth

SOUTHAVEN, MS (AP) - The cities of Southaven and Horn Lake have banned the sale of herbs laced with drugs that mimic the highs of marijuana or methamphetamine.

The Boards of Aldermen in both cities Tuesday passed ordinances banning the sale of the herbs that have been sold as incense products at some local stores.

The ban includes synthetic methamphetamine.

Under the ordinances, any person found to be in violation will be guilty of a misdemeanor.

DeSoto family attacked with hammer

DESOTO CCOUNTY, MS (WMC-TV) - 68-year-old Rosie Clemmons' mobile home was apparently picked at random early Sunday morning by a suspect whose stolen pickup truck broke down along nearby I-69.

"He wanted to use the phone and she said she would call whoever he wanted," said  her cousin, Dorothy Woods.  "By that time he came in on her. Could you imagine that?"

Woods found it difficult to believe when she heard Clemmons was hit on the head with a hammer.

Southaven could outlaw fake pot

SOUTHAVEN, MS (AP) - Southaven officials have drafted a proposed ordinance to ban K2 -- a synthetic herb sold in area stores as an incense that mimics a marijuana high when smoked.

Police and city officials said they've received several complaints from parents about local stores selling their kids the fake pot, which is legal but not meant for human consumption.

At next Tuesday's board of aldermen meeting, The Commercial Appeal reports city officials plan to vote on the K2 ordinance that would prohibit the use, purchase, possession or sale of the synthetic cannabinoid.

Southaven alderman arrested on DUI charge

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Southaven alderman was arrested Monday night in DeSoto County on charges of driving under the influence.

Rickey Jobes was pulled over and arrested around 7:30 p.m. Monday near the I-69/I-55 interchange.

Jobes was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving, and failure to signal. Much of the other information contained in Jobes' arrest report was redacted before the report was released to Action News 5.
