City teaches value of trees

The City of Southaven will host a Northwest MS Community Forestry Workshop entitled "Trees In Our Community". The workshop will be on August 18,2011 (9am-3:15pm) at the M.R. Davis Public Library located at 8554 Northwest Dr., Southaven, MS. There is no cost to attend this workshop.

Those who should attend include: Anyone wanting to learn about trees and green spaces, community leaders, homeowners, business owners, developers, foresters, arborists, nurserymen, and others managing land and trees.

Speakers include, Greg Davis, Mayor of the City of Southaven, Donna Yowell from the Mississippi Urban Forest Council, David Fulgham of National Tree Preservation, Inc., Eric Bridges, C.F. of the City of Lakeland, TN, Dr. Joy Anderson of Mississippi State University Ext. Svc and George Byrd of the Mississippi Forestry Commission.

As your children play outside during the hot summer months, be aware of the danger that is present when young children are around swimming pools, lakes and streams.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years.”

Recycling program headed to Horn Lake

Horn Lake residents may soon be able to able to "go green" with curbside recycling.

Waste Connections Inc. will make a public presentation to the city at the Feb. 1, board meeting to outline the city's new recycling program.

Interested residents will pay a $25 deposit for a cart and be charged $6.25 on their monthly utility bills. The program could start as early as March.
