An Earned Income Tax Credit / Asset Building Forum meeting will be held Tuesday, October 25 at the Haraway Center on the Northwest Mississippi Community College campus. This kick-off event will help promote the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in DeSoto, Marshall, Panola, Tate and Tunica counties.
United Way Senior Vice President of Engagement and Alignment Regina Walker and Yvonne Howard, senior specialist, Community Impact are among the community representatives presenting information at the forum.
The meeting will take place from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.. Lunch will be provided.
The Earned Income Tax Credit has been hailed as “the best anti-poverty, the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress.” In 2003, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) lifted nearly five million Americans above the poverty line. No other government program boosts more children and families out of poverty than EITC.
Leaders and staff from the regulatory agencies, banks and credit unions, community action and housing agencies, micro-enterprise and business development groups, advocates for people of low incomes, education and workforce organizations, faith-based and other nonprofit service providers are all among those who could benefit from this gathering.
Topics to be discussed include:
· EITC/VITA sites
· Disaster tax assistance
· Predatory lending
· Small dollar loan products
· Pre-paid cards and more.
