Southaven residents go door to door in hopes of ousting Davis | News
SOUTHAVEN, MS- (WMC-TV) - The group Concerned Citizens of Southaven is hoping to oust Mayor Greg Davis and needs 10,000 signatures on a petition in three months.
Saturday, members of the group went door to door with the petition they plan to put on the desk of Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant.
"It is a petition requesting that he removes Greg Davis from office, and once he gets the petition he can act on it," said Concerned Citizens of Southaven member Tommy Hurst.
Those who signed said they agree that Davis misused his authority. According to the petition, they say that as mayor, "Davis has knowingly or willfully failed, neglected, or refused to perform his duties" and "failed to put the public interest ahead of his own."
Residents like Oriana Hill said it did not have to come to this. They said after the controversy, they expected Davis to voluntarily step down.
"When I heard he announced that he was not going to resign, I felt a fire rise up in me that I have never felt before," said Hill.
Hurst said fed up residents met him in their driveways eager to sign. He said at the last alderman meeting, citizens told Davis they wanted him out.
"Now that they're seeing action, they're excited and they're behind us," said Hill.
The citizens group said they will be present at the next alderman meeting this coming Tuesday and they will continue to collect signatures until they get the 10,000 needed for their petition.
