Southaven mayor arrested after warrants issued | News
MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) – Southaven mayor Greg Davis is facing an investigation by Mississippi State auditors and the FBI from misuse of city funds.
So it might be surprising that he has ended up with a mug shot over misdemeanor traffic charges when he turned himself in this afternoon.
"I'm glad he did what he did. Why? Because cars come through here and speed all of the time," said witness Lynette Durham.
But the driver of a school bus in this Southaven neighborhood is not so happy about what Mayor Greg Davis did.
She filed a complaint against the mayor who turned himself into the Desoto County Sheriff's office.
"I'm very shocked. I thought I was doing something for child safety," said Davis.
The misdemeanor he is charged with includes overtaking a school bus and having illegal blue lights on his private car - something he says he has had for 15 years as mayor.
"I was bringing my daughter back from the orthodontist. She was in the car with me," said Durham.
The bus filled with children was stopped on the side of the road in a subdivision.
Davis was driving the White SUV.
He and the witness said the driver of the black car whipped around and went into the opposing lane and took off as the child was crossing the road.
Davis and the witness say he pulled up onto the median turned on flashing lights and stopped and waited for the child to cross - then he went after the black SUV.
Durham says the whole thing has been blown out of proportion.
"Its political plain and simple," said defense attorney Steve Farese.
The bus driver who filed the complaint against Mayor Davis has not been identified.
Davis said he is perplexed by all of this. He attended the Taste of DeSoto annual charitable fundraiser after he got out of jail.
