Southaven alderman's new barn angers some neighbors | News
SOUTHAVEN, MS- (WMC-TV) - Neighbors are upset after they said a Southaven alderman raised a barn without properly notifying them.
Southaven alderman Greg Guy's new horse barn has a number of neighbors concerned.
Bill and JoAnn Sudekum said the barn went up without warning earlier this year on land next to Guy's home. In their opinion, the land was rezoned from residential to agricultural without proper notification.
"Once something is zoned agricultural, it's my understanding that anything can go on there," said Bill Sudekum.
Neighbors said they are concerned about the negative impact the barn might have on their property values.
Guy said he plans to keep only a couple of horses in the barn once they are relocated from a rented stable.
"It would just be easier than driving a mile to feed them, to go outside in my own yard and feed them," said Guy.
Guy claimed everything was done above board in the zoning process and that a public notice was posted on the property.
It was not until this week's meeting of the Southaven Board of Aldermen that Guy heard from upset neighbors.
"Because it had been through the planning and zoning and no one showed up to dispute it, then through the board of aldermen and no one disputed it," said Guy.
Guy said he tried to remedy the situation this week by attempting to get the land on which the barn sits under the same resistriction as his subdivision. His fellow aldermen rejected the plan.
