Civil investigation into Southaven mayor nearly finished | News
SOUTHAVEN, MS- (WMC-TV) - After months of crunching numbers, the civil investigation into Southaven Mayor Greg Davis is almost over.
A federal investigation is ongoing, but the Mississippi civil investigation into Davis' spending is in the home stretch.
After almost a year of combing through receipts, the Mississippi State Auditor is about to wrap up his investigation into Davis.
A spokesperson for the auditor's office told the DeSoto Times Tribune that her office is very close to being finished with the civil aspect of the case.
Last November, the state demanded that Davis reimburse Southaven more than $170,000. The expenditures were deemed unrelated to city business by investigators.
Davis made a $96,000 payment in December. The remaining balance was collected from a bond issued to the mayor which he will have to pay back to the bond company.
The auditor's office doesn't have the authority to prosecute Davis, but the mayor's troubles are far from over. State officials are working with the FBI on a criminal investigation into Davis' spending and there's no timetable for when that probe will be coming to a close.
Federal agents aren't just looking at Davis' credit card receipts. They are also gathering information about his campaign spending practices.
