A dream comes true for a single mother

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South mother has the opportunity to achieve a family dream.  April Smith is a single parent and today she receives another title, homeowner.  Smith successfully completed the Healthy Transitions home ownership program which enabled her to be the first in her family to purchase a new house.

This program is a federally supported program that enables low and moderate income families to buy new energy efficient homes with no money down and closing costs paid. This organization also guides qualified clients through the process of buying a new home.

Smith said this moment is a milestone not only for her but for the entire family.

"My mom and my aunt always dreamed of owning a home, but they haven't been able to achieve that yet," said Smith.

Antonio Abram, executive director of Healthy Transitions said the biggest misconception about buying a home is everyone thinks they need perfect credit.

“The reality is, there is a huge demand for stable, affordable, and new housing for low-income families. In many cases, if you can afford to pay rent, you can afford to own a new home,” said Abram.

Smith received the keys to her new home earlier today at a ribbon cutting ceremony in Horn Lake.
