State tired of waiting for Southaven mayor to pay up | News
SOUTHAVEN, MS- (WMC-TV) - Southaven Mayor Greg Davis has been under investigation by the state and FBI since late last year.
He still owes more than $70,000 that the Mississippi State Auditor's office ordered he repay because of questionable spending.
And the state is tired of waiting.
State Auditor Stacey Pickering said Friday that he wants Davis to pay his nearly $74,000 tab sooner rather than later.
"Mayor Greg Davis still owes $73,915.27 following demands issued by the State Auditor's Office after we conducted a civil investigation of misuse of taxpayer funds beginning in 2011," Pickering said in a written statement. "My office is in communication with the Mayor's attorney and his bonding company. We hope to have the remaining money from him sooner rather than later. We cannot make any comments regarding the ongoing criminal investigation. My office averages 200 cases a year, and right now we have 173 active cases of possible fraud, misuse of funds, embezzlement and other issues."
Many Southaven residents agree.
Davis has been in the spotlight for months over what Pickering calls a misuse of taxpayer money. The questionable spending originally totaled around 170,000.
"I paid a lot of money over the years for him to do what he's been doing and that's not right," said Jacob Ashby, a Southaven resident.
Davis, who's accused of spending lavish amounts of taxpayer money on trips and business dinners, has paid back some of what he owes, but his bill still stands at just under $74,000.
"I think he's had time," said Clara Roth, also a Southaven resident. "He should have at least got more paid back than what he has."
Many of the people said they were Davis supporters in the beginning. Some people praised the amenities and recreation facilities Davis helped bring to the city.
However, others felt that he was being treated more leniently than an average citizen would have been and feel it's time for Davis to pay.
Davis declined to comment on when he would pay the remaining money the auditor's office says he owes.
