Cheapest gas found in the Mid-South | News
MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A new report says Memphis has some of the cheapest gas in the country. So, where can you get the best prices in the Mid-South?
After searching all day for stations with the cheapest gas prices, take a look at what we found.
At the Save and Go on the corner of Park and Airways, gas is $2.98 for a gallon of regular unleaded.
The survey publisher, Trilby Lundberg, says the nation is seeing the sharpest drop in gas prices since 2008 with the national average price for regular gas down to $3.55 a gallon.
"At this time of year we don't have as much demand as we do in the summer and other times of the year when people are doing their vacations," said Cheryl Keating, AAA.
AAA says the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Memphis area is currently $ 3.16. One year ago it was at $3.21.
"It's always been said the closer to the interstate, the prices might be higher, again there's probably more demand than if you're a little ways off the interstate," said Keating.
When compared to other states in the Mid-south, websites list the lowest price for regular gas in Memphis at $2.99. In West Memphis, Arkansas, the lowest price is $3.03. And in Southaven, MS, the cheapest price is at $3.09.
Industry experts says the drop in prices is due to Sandy cutting into demand and crude oil prices declining.
"Most of our oil comes from the south, the Gulf Coast. That wasn't affected during Hurricane Sandy, plus 10,000 flights were canceled. That is a lot of fuel that was not used.
