First child advocacy center opens in DeSoto County

The official grand opening of the new Child Advocacy Center in Southaven, Mississippi was Friday.

This new facility will help victims of both physical and sexual abuse in DeSoto County.

The advocacy center is the first in DeSoto County.

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), in collaboration with other local organizations, will encourage youth to take a stand against big tobacco companies and educate their peers about the importance of not smoking on Kick Butts Day, Wednesday, March 20.

Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism which empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against big tobacco companies. Health officials want to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco.

Representatives from the health department will be at the following locations on Wednesday, March 20, to distribute information and tips on smoking cessation:

• University of Memphis-University Center

1 p.m.

Collierville Library receives check for new shelves

Collierville Library receives check for new shelves

The Collierville Rotary Club presented Collierville Library Director Deanna Britton with a check for $800 to purchase new book shelves for the Young Adult section, according to the Town of Collierville Facebook page.

The check was presented on Tuesday at the library. Rotary Club President Bill Samisch presented the check stating,

“The Collierville Rotary Club looks to provide support to educational organizations whenever possible. The library is a great resource for many citizens and we are happy this money will help with needed book shelves," said Rotary Club President Bill Samisch.

DeSoto Central senior up for Wendy's High School Heisman honors

A DeSoto Central High School senior will soon find out if he’s the Wendy’s High School Heisman winner in Mississippi.

Charlie Palmer is a three sport star in basketball, baseball, and swimming for the Jaguars.

He was one of 10 boys and 10 girls to be named a finalist for the award that honors athletes that also perform well in the classroom.

Palmer will head to Jackson to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame February 19th for a banquet where the winner will be announced.
