Southaven baseball players sign with area universities

Baseball will likely continue after high school for a handful of Southaven players.

Four student athletes signed with are NCAA Division 1 schools on Wednesday.

Pitcher Nolan Blackwood committed to the University of Memphis.

Catcher Henri Lartigue and pitcher Wyatt Short both signed with Ole Miss.

Vance Tatum, a left-handed pitcher, committed to Mississippi State University.

Since childhood, each of the four young men competed with and against each other.

In addition to the student athletes’ success on the field, their principal said it matches their work in the classroom.

“They are gifted athletes, great kids and students. I have no doubt they are going to be successful on the next playing level and in life,” said Southaven High School Principal Shane Jones.

Jones predicted all of the athletes would graduate with honors.

Report: Students didn’t graduate because of test scores

(WMC-TV) - A new report shows that Mississippi students’ scores on state tests are improving, but some are still struggling.

The report says more than 2,000 Mississippi students did not graduate this year because of their results on standardized tests. The number is down by about 10 percent or so this year.

New administrator coming to Horn Lake school

(WMC-TV) – Horn Lake Intermediate School is getting a new principal, but according to the DeSoto Times Tribune, he’s not a stranger to many of his students.

Here’s some background on the school’s new administrator from the Times Tribune:

Horn Lake Middle School’s Assistant Principal Marco Findley, 34, will assume the principal’s duties at Horn Lake Intermediate effective July 1. His promotion was approved Thursday by DeSoto County Schools’ Board of Education.

Cordova High student invited to attend leadership camp

Deidra Shores, a Cordova High School sophomore, has been selected to attend the 2012 Summer Queens’ Camp for Leadership and Excellence sponsored by Black Girls Rock! Inc.

Deidra will join 49 other African-American girls from across the country for a two-week intensive leadership program. Shores, along with other camp participants, will learn the importance of teamwork, community service and social development.

DeSoto County residents invited to public meeting

DeSoto County residents invited to public meeting

(WMC-TV) - DeSoto County residents are being invited to a public meeting on Thursday where a variety of community issues will be discussed.

Lee Caldwell, District 4 Supervisor for the county called the meeting.

Topics that are on the agenda include: internet problems, the animal shelter, DeSoto County schools, and mosquito spraying.

The meeting is set to begin at 6:30 at the central maintnance center in Nesbit, Mississippi at 2339 Glynn Road.

(WMC-TV) - You might wonder how at-risk youngsters in Memphis in the Mid-South might benefit via a connection to rap music royalty. Keep reading because Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, wants to offer a bit of his wealth to young people who generally have zero chance when it comes to college scholarships.

Jay-Z's foundation offers help to select young people who want to improve their education and make their own contributions to the community.
